"Network, network, network. So often the volunteer manager is the driving force behind recruitment, training and engagement, which can feel isolating. I recommend joining TAVA where you will meet like-minded professionals."

how does TAVA help you?

Although my current role is not volunteer- centered, I've gained fantastic collaboration and leadership experience through being part of TAVA's Executive Committee. I also get a lot from our workshop and conference speakers; their knowledge and insights are applicable to anyone's professional development.

In the past year, what was your most memorable professional project and why?

Recognizing I was ready for a new role and a new challenge.

Would you please explain the professional success you're most proud of and how you implemented it?

Success to me, is when you leave a role and the people who step in are successful and can take the role to the next level. I don’t see success as an individual accomplishment, but a collaborative effort to achieve a desired outcome!

In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge to working in Volunteer Engagement?

Volunteer shortages. We all have busy lives and time is a precious resource. Recruiting and retaining volunteers can be a challenge especially for longer term roles.

What advice would you give to someone looking to take the next step in their Volunteer Engagement career?

Network, network, network. So often the volunteer manager is the driving force behind recruitment, training and engagement, which can feel isolating. I recommend joining TAVA where you will meet like-minded professionals. The combined expertise in any given meeting will offer insight and support for those who have chosen this profession. I love that so many sectors are represented and each person brings something unique to the table.

When you're not working, how do you like to spend your time?

I teach Pilates which I love, and I volunteer...not just with TAVA but with various organizations working to address food insecurity & poverty. One of my favorite quotes is “we all have two hands, one to help ourselves the second to help others.”
